Ask your energy supplier to accept affordable payments (sole name)

Use this letter to help you negotiate with your electricity or gas supplier to agree payments you can afford to cover your current energy bills and repayments on the energy debt you owe.  Contact us for advice before using this letter.

You can choose to send a letter in your own name or in joint names. You may have a debt in joint names, or want to write to your creditors together because you have worked out a joint budget.

  • Fill in your contact details, account number and any extra information you want to include in the grey shaded areas.
  • Today’s date will be added automatically.
  • Sign each letter and enclose a copy of your budget if needed.

Letter in joint names

Include a paragraph outlining the special circumstances you have that you want the energy supplier to take into accountsuch as illness, disability, age or bereavement. It is always a good idea to give as much information as you can about why it is difficult for you to keep up with the current payments. Explain your circumstances and give details of your financial difficulties. Include how many people there are in your household, the ages of any dependent children that you have, whether there has been a change in your circumstances and so on. Include a copy of your personal budget with your letter with full information about your income, outgoings and how much you can afford to pay.
