Advice you can trust

Credit reference agencies

There is no such thing as a 'credit blacklist' but if you do not pay your debts, you may find it difficult to get credit in the future.

Credit reference agencies

Credit reference agencies hold information about your credit agreements, decrees and electoral roll information.

Your credit file will also hold information about any credit arrears you have.

The information a credit reference agency holds about you is known as your credit report (or file).

Credit reference agencies provide factual information with your consent, so that a company can make a decision about whether to lend you money.

They do not have a ‘blacklist’ of people who should not be given credit.

Our fact sheet on Credit reference agencies explains what these organisations are, what they do, and your rights.
