Increasing your income

Financial help for people aged 16 to 19

  • If you are on a low income and have children who are staying on at school or college, they may be able to get an Educational Maintenance Allowance (EMA). You can get more information on EMA from your child’s school, college or local council or at www.emascotland.com.
  • If you are studying but are not living at home, you may be able to get a bursary for your living costs, but this will depend on your age, family circumstances and income.  You can also receive this while you are getting an Educational Maintenance Allowance.  Contact the college you will be studying at or see www.gov.scot for more details.
  • If you are disabled, you may be able to get help with extra costs, travel and other expenses through the college’s discretionary fund and an Additional Support Needs for Learning Allowance.  Contact the college you will be studying at or see www.gov.scot for more details.
